how can we be sure that most people weren't originally searching for hrt and got confused in the way?

Depends whether it's a good one.

Are you a bat? Even at 640x480 60 Hz you're looking at a 30 kHz whine. Maybe you're just a zoomer who doesn't know a TV from a monitor. TVs used interlaced roughly 480i signals that had a 15 kHz horizontal refresh and thus has an audible, annoying whine.

The front of the tube is leaded glass for this very reason. A year of using a CRT gives you about as much extra radiation as if you ate one banana.

And no I'm not a CRTfag. I have a 17" CRT I keep around for nostalgia purposes but I use LCDs exclusively for modern systems because they make text nice and crisp, and I can have a 30" monitor without needing 2 guys to haul it and an extra sturdy desk to put it on.

What can I say, I used them for years in the 90s and early 2000s and know about them, but I use all LCDs today.
