Realistically could companies use the Cell processor for more complicated calculations in current year? Getting a PlayStation 3 with old firmware is relatively cheap in bulk compared to buying a supercomputer

Maybe, but that shit would get so toasty that the inefficiency would render any costs saved null.

Air Force discontinued that service and sold the condor cluster of PS3's a few years ago. Neat how they did calcations with that many consoles. Isn't there like one university in the U.S. that still uses hundreds of PS3's to simulate black holes?
That's on the developer side, no? I heard it was somewhat easy for people to make a Linux based PS3 do complex calculations (not developing games) and the system was great for that.

Enjoy getting it ylod'd after 1 use
>90nm for phat, 45nm for slim
Yeah, no
A single 3990x has 70 times the single precision performance
A 3090 has 200 times the performance
at this point i highly doubt a ps3 cluster can compete with modern gpus in cost/speed/size/power
it only made sense in 2006 when they were a subsidised console (they typically sell consoles with little to no mark-up because they're expecting to make up the difference with game software sales)
