But why? I thought that GANOO+Pinus is lightweight? I thought that free (libre) software is written by compenent autists who love what they do?
Requires at least 16 GiB of RAM to function properly
Kill yourself RAMlet. Not everyone is a tinkering troon like you.
I will never stop using my Thinkpad T400.
This is why you use window managers
That is why you use xfce.
Everything else is trash.
>>requires at least 16 GiB of RAM to function properly
Obvious lie, but let me disprove this in case some poor uninformed soul comes across this retarded thread and believes it.
GNOME, let alone desktop environments as a whole, don't actually use that much memory. It's a complete myth that Any Forums idiots keep repeating, despite the fact that they could easily verify this themselves.
>is completely unusable on 22-years old Thinkpads
What does it do that DEs from year 1999 can't?
I got aneurysm from reading your post.
What are you even trying to say?
Gnome 3 and it’s updates have been absolutely cancerous. It’s recreating the worst aspects of MacOS and even limits customization to a silly degree.
Who is gnome 3 even for? Who asked for this?
What features were added to XFCE since 1999? DEs worked just fine on computers of that era. Why don't modern DEs work on computers of that era?
Have 22 more years of bug hunting and polish.
>requires at least 16 GiB of RAM to function properly
Wrong
A PC from 1999 can't handle a comprehensive general indexer.
>requires at least 16 GiB of RAM to function properly
I use a ideapad i3-5gen, 8gb ram without graphic and works good, fucking poor ramlet, kek.
>use xfce on devuan
>425mbs of ram used when idle
>use openbox wm
>300mbs of ram used when idle
lol
There was a time when PCs had 640 kbs of RAM.
If you want a comparable amount of functionality, using a standalone window manager barely saves you any RAM over a full DE.
I have nothing wrong against such setups, but the notion that they are supposedly "lighter" is simply false.
It was also a time where they couldn't do a fraction of the things they can do now.
You don't need 300 mbs of RAM for a DE.
>>is completely unusable on 12-years old Thinkpads
everything is unusable on a 12yo thinkpad.
Any lightweight DE is usable on 12yo Thinkpads
And? If you'll install a bunch of stuff on openbox, like panel, notification daemon, compositor, it will have almost exact ram consumption as full xfce. The difference is - xfce kinda preconfigured already, while with openbox you can choose whatever you want.
Performance wise the difference is neglectful.
I only use a panel (tint2) and the RAM consumption is less.
Everything else is useless for me.
The dirty little secret is that Linux isn’t particularly efficient for a single DE environment we are using it in. Never forget it was a mainframe system first, then sort of ported to regular desktops from unix to minix to Linux
No, but I want a lot more memory than that because it's far more convenient to work with.
