It's literally political cope. Russia has made it clear that unless Germany backs off on the sanctions and support for Ukraine, it will cease supplying it with gas over winter. Germany can't do that, at this point the only thing they can do is double down on supporting Ukraine while praying that it is defeated quickly.
The politicians realise that there won't be any Russian gas this winter unless they actually commit political suicide and alienate literally all of the west, so they pretend they have any form of control over the situation by pretending that this is by choice.
German cities are setting up schools and gymnasiums as basically refugee centres because a lot of people won't be able to afford heating their homes this winter, wood and pellet fireplace manufacturers are fully booked until like May everywhere, and the people who already have fireplaces are rushing to buy wood.
Most likely, half the population will be making do with home temperatures of about 10 degrees this winter. All because Germany decided that the correct response to Fukushima was to knee-jerk shut down nuclear and not build any replacements for the capacity. They'll be pulling the Euro and all their neighbours down with them. Sweden for example has good nuclear and hydro capabilities and almost zero reliance on gas, they could cut themselves off from the euro power grid and be just fine, but in all likelihood they are going to export a lot of their capacity to heat Germany because a collapse of German industry means they lose most of their export market.

No they won't. There's no pipelines from German ports to the German industrial heartlands that actually have the power plants. It'll be 5 years or so until that's viable.
Their exclusive option is to beg other countries for gas and electricity for a while.
No, and as mentioned above, it wouldn't matter if they were.
