depends on the cost of the panels, your battery storage or ability to sell back to the grid (if any), and how much sunlight your roof gets. Oh yeah, and the price of grid power, the cheaper that is, the longer the payoff period. But yeah, it can easily be a long-ass time. My mom lives in the midwest US and bought a bunch of panels, and if I remember right she won't break even on them for something like fifteen years.
