Cinnamon followed closely by XFCE. Although lately I have been using Gnome and I kind of enjoy how "premium" it feels.
Honestly most DEs end up being kind of the same once you start customizing it to your liking I've found.

GNOME users don't care about desktop environments and just use theirs
KDE users NEED you to know that they are better than GNOME
XFCE users are contrarians and need to use something different than the two obvious choices
and if you use something like MATE, Cinnamon, you are using GNOME: new bad old good edition
