Use what suits you best

A white background is supposed to simulate paper. Some people say that a monitor is like a lightbulb, not paper. Other people think that makes sense. But when you shine a desk lamp on paper, it's so the paper reflects the light back into your eyes. That's what white paper does. I would think the light reflected from a desk lamp off a piece of white paper is probably as bright, in lumens, as a laptop screen.

Same reason any underage hates light themes: they live in mortal fear of mom seeing light through the gap under the door after midnight, and barging in to find out what they look at online - whether it be porn, Any Forums, transgender propaganda, whatever.

theyve been making this same tired joke for 5 years. ive tried switching everything to light theme (light on windows, yotsuba theme here, etc) and i dont think it's bad or uncomfortable to look at. i simply prefer the look and feel of dark mode, and that's the end of it. anyone who says light mode is the worst thing ever is an overreacting faggot or someone trying too hard to be funny

this is it

This!

I have debilitating floaters and looking at anything even slightly bright and uniform is pure torture
But I’ll still use light theme during the day

Your theme and screen brightness should match the brightness of your room. Everything else causes eye strain
