Nvidia? High refresh/multiple monitors? I always need to run Nvidia inspector with MDPS to get it to properly downclock.

undervolt your cpu & gpu also turn on power saving mode on your monitor.

I always wondered what the power saving modes actually do for idle power. I stopped using them in windows 7 because they caused massive performance issues. Will report back shortly with results.

Weird, I just thought it was the monitor itself. I have 2 monitors connected and the GPU eats up 30W whether I set one of them to 165hz or 60hz. I personally would rather use 30 or even 50W more if I can just use the 165hz, that's what I bought the fucking monitor for. This is not a 2022 high end GPU or intel CPU, there's no such cause for concern.

The monitor actually consumes about 1/3 of the power it takes to pump it to 144hz from 60hz. Maybe it's just my shit old CPU and GPU that are causing it to be extra bad.

try MDPS anyway or if it doesn't let you, try manually lowering the power state from NV inspector.
Test it for a while -- the screen might flicker if it the GPU really needs the juice its currently pulling.

The GPU is sitting at 0% load usually, seems unlikely it's actually causing that much of a spike, probably more likely the CPU. Not really sure how to check more specifically than task manager.

Thinking about it that way it makes sense, I always imagined it shouldn't be consuming significantly more power if nothing is actually changing on screen, but I guess screen refreshes don't work like video compression file sizes lol

Of course this doesn't make sense. It shouldn't use this much power to transmit the vram content to the monitor faster

That's very strange. I benchmarked this on my G14 laptop and got 2-3% less battery life throughout the day on 120hz VS 60hz.

how are you measuring this? do you have one of the meters you plug into?
are you plugging in the whole PC or just monitor?
I'd like to see results of just the monitor's power requirements at 144 vs 60

it's about the actual flashing of the screen 60 times per second or 144 times per second
more times the led turns on and off = more power

This is just the PC plugged into a watt meter. I'll try the monitor in a minute.

This is not measuring monitor power consumption and the monitor itself is also not strobing. It's not using lightboost.

Varying all over the place, I must have some intel variable clock setting in BIOS enabled.

But this is measuring the PC power. PC's use about least 70 watts even if the monitor is off. The numbers don't make sense

Any LED power usage would be seen only on the monitor
