Do some reading on RWA, Right Wing Authoritarianism. Altemeyer and Adorno's seminal work shows that about 30%-35% of the population is susceptible to becoming Right Wing Authoritarians, and it's no coincidence that the bedrock support for Trump is 30%-35%. The problem is that this is a *huge* and potentially lucrative demographic for any politicians cynical enough to pander to them, even though it destroys the economy, educational system, and culture of the nation.
It was Reagan who sold the soul of the Republican Party to the RWAs, accepting the support of the mega-churches in exchange for them supporting trickle-down economics. So he got to destroy the US economy and turn the country into a third-world shithole *and* he put power into the hands of delusional authoritarians at the same time.
Once Reagan lit the fuse, what's happening to the US was inevitable. No political party is willing to alienate a voting bloc of 30%-35% if their opposition is willing to do whatever it takes to court them, which means the US is being run by and for the dumbest and most psychotic elements of the population.
"Therapy" would risk breaking up this bloc. It's never going to happen. The US is going to drink the poisoned Kool Aid right down to the bitter dregs.
