Ukrainian is the second language in Ukraine. Russian is the only language a ton of Ukrainians know, and Russian was the language in Ukraine from 1920-1991

To be fair most Ukrainians around 30 or older speak Russian and Ukrainian because Russian was the official language of the USSR. Most Russians don't know Ukrainian because it was never widely implemented. They kind of sound the same but not enough that a person who speaks only Russian wouldn't have a hard time understanding Ukrainian.
