Now there is war in Ukraine, and no one calls it fake news (except Putin). Why is war in Ukraine "real news", while things like millions around the world dying of covid is "fake news"?

Simply put OP it's not a fake war. The reasons being given may be fake. The war is real. The propaganda is necessary to justify the future actions. If the world supports Putin he can be more aggressive. If the world opposes Putin he can't be aggressive or he will have the world to deal with. It's why he's using limited aggression right now. The world opposes him. Don't think for a second he wouldn't use chemical warfare if he could.
