Make sure you wear earpro before you blow your brains out, don't want it getting worse.

Short answer: you don't.

There is some research out of Ireland for a device that uses sound and electrical impulses to the tongue to treat it, but it's not widely available yet.

Checked and kek'd

Fuck.

I saw a study some years ago that just used a sequence of tones around the frequency of the tinnitus, listened to through earphones for hours a day as you go about what your day. I believe it's been made into a commercial product but it costs thousands and needs a professional consultation to set it up, while just being basically a mp3 player with a timer and earphones. Seems to me you could identify the frequency using a tone generator website, and then use Audacity to make some short tones a bit above and below that then loop that to the desired length and listen to it on your regular phone and earbuds.

Medfag here. Depends on the cause of your tinnitus:
>It can come from muscle tension in the face or neck region, here you should visit a specialist to tackle those.
>If it comes from a sickness like morbus-meniere then you would need a special tratment with meds
>It also sometimes is caused by depression and stress, so wort on this as well
>If it is from a hearing damage and lasts longer than 1 year than you are pretty lost

What you should do is seeing a.otolaryngologist as soon as possible to look at your causes. And start a potential treatment.

What you can do for yourself is to adopt cope strategies.and relaxation exercises. You should also start cardio which betters the blood flow in your ears which helps some patients.

So see a specialist, reduce stress, make relaxation exercise, start cardio and avoid noise

I was in an accident a few years back, it’s just been getting worse and worse since. I’ve tried all the common shit for it, I’m just desperate at this point.

Have you gone to a GOOD doctor? I'm talking Mayo level doctor?

In that case i strongy advise you to see a psychologist which will helpf you to live with it. (there are even some psychologists specialised on tinnitus, do some reaserch for such in the area you live) .

If you tried everything else seriously, then only such counseling can alleviate your pain. As most people suffer more from the psychologic impacts than of the actual tinnitus.

But I also have to add, and this is important, that you have to see different doctors and specialists until you find one who actually helps you. So if you don't have succes in one case please don't give up. There are good doctors and psychologists out there which will really change your life if you let them

Have you had an x-ray to see if you have spine damages? I know that an accident can also causes muscle tensions, so maybe work on that as the guy above said?

This is called retraining therapy and indeed it helps some patients

Does silence have a background noise of a quiet high pitched sound, or is that tinnitus?

Some people hear their own blood stream in their ears, which sounds different to them. A persistens high pitched tone is a tinnitus. Most people hear at least some tone in absolute silence, especially if they are older. But its only consists a problem if it impacts your sleep or your
day to day live. But as I tell everyone, protect your ears
there is no shame of wearing ear buds at a concert
or avoiding clubs. Also always wear protection if you use power tools, they often have special frequencies
causing a tinnitus

I guess I was born with tinnitus then. At least it’s not bad, like the ringing after a gunshot.

Sometimes in the dead of night I’ll hear my blood through my ears, but the tinnitus is still there.

Some sort of noise is absolutely normal, alone
the day to day noise of traffic, school, and work
cause some degree of tinnitus in most people.
Our ears aren't meant for the loud noises our modern
civilization produces.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

What does true silence sound like?

I have to add here, that our brain is able to filter out
most tinnitus tones and even minor hearing damages, similar
to the fact that you don't normally see your nose though
its always in the field of your vision.
So this is what i meant for OP, counseling and training can aid
in restoring those brain filters and therefore alleviate pain.

bee venom, not even joking. just make sure yuo arnt allergic

Reading through the thread, it's clear it's not going to go away anytime soon. Best you can do is arrange an appointment with a doctor or hearing specialist, hopefully you'll get it sorted OP. Look after yourself in the meantime and stay strong. - OldFart

That is a difficult question, because your brain is able to hallucinate sounds if it is bored and you can also hear your organs work. I think true silence, if you dead focus on your hearing, isn't achievable.
