Nearly all food franchises exist because the first restaurant was so good that they were forced to open up a second location. Once upon a time Pizza Hut was a massively popular sit down restaurant. Papa Johns came in with lots of small stores when they franchised and was so good they were able to expand over the entire country very quickly
Then some business assholes came in and did blind taste tests. Showed that group A couldn't tell the difference between the premium ingredient and the cheaper ingredient. They then changed the pizza and repeated that for every single ingredient until you ended up with the shit both sling out now.

Its especially obvious with Papa John's as I remember the pizza looking very similar in the 90s, but being wowed as kid by how the cheese stretched the first time I had it. I haven't seen the cheese stretch on a Papa John's pizza in atleast a decade
