I see your point, although the reason why I'm giving my attention to three books is to: Inspire myself, take notes on how description, lore and exposition are done(I'm always trying to be careful in that one), among other things

What are you using, out of curiosity? Both GIMP and Krita are free, as skull mentioned. GIMP I couldn't see in a pro environment without people writing their own plugins but Krita should be reasonable.
