It's greed, but it's not the oil companies doing the speculating it's coked out stock brokers representing the worlds largest trading firms. It's people who bought in at $1 a gallon and FOMO'd the price up and all the people who followed suit. The stock market is a big game of follow the leader. One person goes in on an option and then everyone follows suit and the earlier you get in the more you make. They can FOMO price jack back down by arguing that it cut demand too much to raise the price so sharply
