The middle guy is the Instructor. The yellow squares are for firing blanks. All those weapons are filled with blanks. This is during boot camp.

The soldiers without the muzzles are officerd carrying live weapons

The poor kids with the rectangles have muzzle adapters that turn a live weapon into a blank gun. It's called the MILES system, and it's basically laser tag, but using real weapons.

Back in the early 2000s, several dozens of US Army troops and officers came here to get survival instruction for warfare in the Afghan mountains, and we got up there in the hills for a good 2 weeks, so just 3 days in the woods for the USMC seems quite brief.

I'm not a military myself but a civilian mountain instructor who was hired to provide survival instruction for Rangers in a hostile, high-altitude environment, and when the US military asked for a suggested duration for the training I said 10 days and they extended it to 14, thinking 10 was too short (they were right about that)
So, after that it was a surprise to see that they go into the woods for just 3 days
