My sister is going to college and she needs a laptop. Now, she wants a Macbook, but I just don't like the idea of giving her a shitty laptop, so I bought a used thinkpad t480 from my programmer friend. My arguments are this thinkpad is all her need for college and it will last her 10 more years. I sent it to her without telling that beforehand, and she thought it was gonna be a Macbook. Last night she just angrily called me an asshole and a cheapskate. What did I do wrong?

You are an asshole and a cheapskate, OP. But more than anything you’re an idiot. I’ve had the 16GB/512GB M1 MacBook Air since early 2021 and it absolutely shits on my work-issued T490. The M1 is blazingly fast, gets great battery life, and doesn’t throttle like an asthmatic soccer player. And it costs less than the T490 new. It’s my first new Mac in over 20 years, and my first non Thinkpad laptop ever. I would not go back anytime soon.
Now the M2 is not quite the bargain that the M1 was, but the performance is still there, and you gain MagSafe.
