Because Trump is beneficial for Putin, but not in the way that most people would think.
Putin does not want NATO along his borders, and is scared shitless that NATO would soon overreach their influence closer to Russia in order to soon force them to install a friendlier regime. That's because Russia is an enormous oil supplier to pretty much all of Europe, and oil is always precious in a global scale.
Should NATO manage to position themselves near Russia's border enough, Russia doesn't have the strength to hold defensive positions because of their unfortunate geography. Therefore, any incursions with NATO on Russia's border would mean Yugoslavia 2.0 for Russia. Russia wants their borders to be as far away from NATO, hence the importance of having buffer states such as Belarus and Ukraine to limit the NATO forces on their border.
America, on the other hand, is widely known as the global police force, as can be seen on their influence over NATO and their extremely high contributions to it in contrast to the other nations that makes up for it. Trump threatened to leave NATO because of this, and he practically demanded that others in the treaty to pick up their parts to not make America the main fodder force should the NATO articles be triggered. America leaving NATO is of course a huge boon for Putin and Russia, and so his friendliness towards Trump during his presidency.
Now, though, after Ukraine's 2014 coup, their frequent insistence to join NATO, and America's realigning towards NATO, Putin felt pressured to invade Ukraine to get his buffer state in order to protect his country from any perceived NATO threat.
Putin is at the very least savvy. Call him evil and I might be inclined to agree, but kvetching over a "genius" remark is being purposely underestimating Putin's political prowess, which is not a good thing.
