Just enough to survive, but not enough to feel comfortable or satisfied.

Why OP? Because man is full of greed. Greed is the worst of all sins. Man's greed comes in the form of temptation (wanting that which he doesn't have) or power. Because money is an abstract concept to which your subconscious mind does know has no actual value, it feeds an endless cycle of greed. There is never enough money because money isn't real. Power is what lead to the creation of money.

That being said, if all people have to work one way or another for shelter and food, and because the money is not real or meaningless, then everything is free in a sense. You will have to work to survive one way or another. The amount of money you get towards that survival doesn't matter.

If a group of people pitched in and produced items for mutual consumption you've created a commune... or in murica we like to call them co-op's because fuck commies..

A commune where everything is free and mutually produced is really just an inefficient exchange market. If the bread maker makes too much bread then he could give out the surplus bread, or he could monetize the bread for currency, and efficiently get chickens for money. Now the farmer can provide bread and eggs for the commune.

Do that enough times and on a larger scale then you've created efficient capital markets. Just in time production is how capital markets maximize demand and supply. Excess is the enemy in capital markets.

Tldr capitalism is necessary, but it doesn't provide extra food and shelter for everyone because it's inefficient.
