I don't think he was until this last decade or so. Richard stopped contributing to projects around 2008 which neatly coincides with him becoming more antisocial and extreme. I don't think his hands hurt too much to code. There are ergonomic settings for emacs, ergonomic input devices, FLOSS dictation software, etc that people with severe disability use to program without issue. What happened is due to something happening in his brain, he lost some of his capacity for rational thought, and therefore his ability to comprehend code.

He had that issue when installing Linux was more like installing gentoo. I don't think it was about he didn't have the physical ability to learn how to do it, he just thought it was a waste of time. Let's be real RMS was not planning on distro hopping. He probably thought that he would install it once and be done with it. He also thought it probably wasn't worth the hassle to go through the docs and learn everything for a process he was only going to do one time. I don't blame him. He probably wanted to spend that time doing something he enjoyed or learning something he would actually use.

Why would he "install Linux?" He doesn't even like it and it's only due to his obstinacy that the HURD is still somewhat alive. He wanted the HURD which would have had multiple "personalities" such as POSIX / Unix, or GECOS or anything else you like. It stalled out because it's actually a pretty big feat but it's still on left support.
Linux is just some interim thing he doesn't care about, which he views as a tiny piece of his GNU system, just there for now.

Which is why you guide all your friends to use the nonfree ISO instead. If you use that then current year Debian is not really more complicated than Linux Mint. There are a couple of weird questions like which domain does this computer belong to, like you're creating a server or something. Also you have to know to skip the root password phase if you want sudo to be installed automatically. I don't think there ever will be a point where everyone manually installs their OS so steering towards infinite handholding might be pointless. For people who don't know how to do it, someone else should do it.

Even with the nonfree iso, Debian couldn't figure out how to connect to my DHCP on installation when I tried to install it on an Optiplex. Tried Ubuntu-server instead and everything went alright.
