That's really the only reason why he'd do it, despite the economic ramifications. Russia's economy is going to take a massive gut punch this year after all the sanctions come through. What does he have to lose by going all the way? The real question is as follows: If the vast majority of the Russian people end up below the poverty line and living in conditions as bad as during the post-USSR collapse, will the fact that Putin has reacquired former territories of the USSR be enough to keep them from revolting?

Biden lifted the Nord 2 sanctions, so Russia doesn't need to ship through Ukraine. Russia can shell and bomb Ukraine with impunity
and Russia has a friendly arrangement with China. Taiwan is cutting off Russia from Taiwan-made superconductors. Biden has shown he is weak, so China will invade Taiwan.
