I've only seen the original series and the end of Eva, but we both know that in the end it's not the German girl who stops them, but our boy Shinji by manning up finally and saying no to that sick plan.
Btw I've just rewatched it, and I just realized that EoE completely fucks Shinji's progress as a character up. He's much more self-reliant in the original ending, and I really hate how they just made him the pussy we all remember in EoE.
