The same way the stooges are proto punk, they are not black flag or agent orange, minor threat or agnostic front, but they are proto punk.

The Stooges are pretty fucking rock and not punk. The speed, distortion, and heaviness all make Led Zeppelin one of the most obvious pioneers of Heavy Metal, alongside Black Sabbath.
Yeah but come on, they are hard rock more than anything, black sabbath on their first song laid the blueprint for metal, paranoid only solidified the ground work they laid, masters of reality birthed doom and stoner metal, by sabbath bloody sabbath they had nothing to prove and were just cranking out tunes. There is no mistaking black sabbath for anything else other than heavy metal, whereas led zeppelin even if they greatly influenced the scene are mostly hard rock. Even if somebody did something similar to it and influenced the later way doesnt mean that they are metal in this case. Like the beatles' helter skelter, maybe if their song is proto metal because they were trying to be hard, they still are mostly a love band singing tunes about love and playing soft rock at that.
I continue to insist metal is all about the level of distortion, which Led Zeppelin had, but they are also obviously hard rock too, so whatever, but being about love has nothing to do with metal criteria. You can make death metal about love. I do wonder how you and Ozzy would feel about this shit, which came out in fucking 1968.
>masters of reality birthed doom and stoner metal
Black Sabbath also invented Thrash Metal in 1975 with Symptom of the Universe.

Im not saying it cant be metal, like early metal but can easily be confused with rock whereas with black sabbath there is absolutely zero doubt that it is metal. By the time maiden rolled around it is like there is zero confusion as to whether this stuff is rock whereas deep purple, zeppelin, and Beatles are mostly rock. Not saying they cant go hard, I like all of those bands stuff. Ritchie blackmore is mindblowing and still holds up, imagine hearing deep purple when it came out only for years later sabbath and the rest to hit the scene. No doubt about page being good and lennon and mccartney? They are the fucking Beatles for christs sake, put some respect on their names, but they are heavier rock, early metal. Like how languages evolve, we have modern english, late english, middle english and old english, those transitionary periods are confusing but by a certain tjme there is no doubt that there is a shift and change.
