Forgot the biggest hypocrisy. The industrial slavery of the north. A slave in the south was an expensive livestock investment from which one hoped to get decades of work. They were fed, sheltered, and cared for with this in mind.

Meanwhile the "free" people of the North were a throwaway commodity. It didn't matter if they got hurt or sick you just replaced them at no cost. Unlike the southern slave the"free" factory worker could literally be worked to death because they were always "free" to leave and risk starvation while rejoining the hundreds competing for each available job.

It initially didn't. Learn a little history. Northern population was getting weary of a war that was supposed to be over in months and not years. The emancipation proclamation and the idea of "fighting to free the slaves" was an after the fact justification continuing a war not many wanted to continue to fight. The bait and switch to a "moral" rational for a war is still in use. eg. a war to destroy weapons of mass destruction becomes a war for Iraqi freedom.

Originally a purely constitutional war (Lincoln promised not to touch the institution of slavery if the North were victorious), and eventually became a sort of revolutionary war after Lincoln's reelection. Regardless, even though the North won militarily, it still capitulated to the South socially and economically following the Hayes-Tilden Compromise of 1877, which paved the way for the reemergence of the semi-feudal society of the South, its relative maldevelopment, and rebirth of the Klan.
