This stems back from the long period of time in human history where life expectancy was short and success of procreation (a biological imperative) was best with able-bodied young females. The older a female got, the higher the chance of some sort of sickness or handicap that would impact pregnancies and/or raising the child to a viable age.
So men are attracted to young girls who barely reached the age of puberty. Men can delude yourself into thinking that doesn't apply to them (but the only men it doesn't apply to are homosexuals), and are in fact conditioned not to allow themselves to even think about whether a girl at this is attractive, and are horrified when they catch themselves having such thoughts.
