I'm 36 and have been experiencing common acid reflux symptoms since I was about 29. Pretty much anything bad and laying down (or running or just being alive) gets my stomach going. Coffee, greasy food, chocolate cake, eggs, seriously every risk food bothers me but at what point is it considered serious that I should seek further medical advice? I understand my health should always be taken seriously but if I eat like shit and get reflux symptoms isn't that to be expected? I don't get the symptoms when taking Prilosec and avoid those foods (I really like coffee though) so when should I consider the symptoms abnormal? Thanks /b roast me in the comments

Had the same thing until i took a full two week course of omeprazole(prilosec) and it literally cured me permanently. I am usually against taking chemicals for a problem unless its absolutely required but if you are uncomfortable it probably cant hurt to try

if you don't tackle it, by diet, medicine, or otherwise, you'll damage your asophagus irrepably

Thanks for replying, that's extremely interesting. As I stated in the post I have been taking Prilosec and it seems to fire the symptoms but not permanently, they come back if I forget to take them, also the symptoms don't go away 100% but mostly. I HAVE heard some personal stories from people though about medication curing it permanently for no reason they knew, it just goes that way for some people. I actually have visited a doctor who told me it was acid reflux but sometimes wonder if it could be something worse

get rid* of the symptoms

If it doesn't go away completely try increasing the dose, it really helped me. Also seeing a GI specialist can help if you want to try other medications or get surgery for it

I eventually just became reliant on Anacid tablets/liquid, it’s become a staple of my diet.

Odd. I had the same issue, same age. I got something from the doctor called Protonix. It's similar to Prilosec considering its a PPI. Cured my reflux that caused acute GERD so bad that I was shitting straight stomach acid. Only thing that does, unless you can get Gaviscon? which is similar.

i just took an early prilosec as opposed until waiting a full 24 hours, hope it doesnt kill me. Protonix, interesting, ill look into it

are you overweight?

it is the primary driver in the symptoms that you speak in the majority of people. losing that intraabdominal fat and deceasing pressure on your abdomen will alleviate most of those symptoms.

you may have an overlapping gallbladder issue which is different- but losing weight would be a great first step.

Its used more often to treat not only the effects during but it is better at treating the EE (damage). The side effects and drug interaction are quite different between the two, but that would be something for you and your doc.

I actually lost about 30 pounds a couple of years ago from a slight diet change (in response to the reflux, ate less and less shitty) and some minimal exercising and less beer. I was a little freaked out something was wrong with me because I lost weight so quickly BUT those changes I made were true

do you drink a lot of alcohol OP?

If you didn't drink Rockstar's/monsters/soda and no water sure, I always recommend adjusting your gut flora first. That was my issue, and probiotic kombucha SCOBY team helped quite a bit.

Gastroentoritis

I used to drink very frequently, a couple of years ago I lowered my drinking quite a bit. Now only once every few months. I drink a lot of coffee though still which seems to bother me but its hard to stop in the mornings
