I've been playing D&D and consims since the eighties. I've been amongst those nerds for decades. I think they're all keenly aware they're playing expensive toy soldiers. I'm still fairly convinced that's what sold them on the hobby in the first place. I'm also pretty sure they don't care. When you have nothing else going on in life, I imagine stuff like 40k is what your disposable income goes toward.

I've never exactly been hip on the GW Warhammer stuff. Having taken a good at it, I surmised that it really was just buying a whole bunch of expensive science fiction models, spending weeks painting them, and then putting them on a table and throwing handfuls of d6 at each other until the correct numbers to win the game come up. Perhaps an oversimplification but I stand by it. To be fair, I was deeply tempted by Flames of War for around a year. I always recall the years of listening to people sneer at us for buying $100+ wargames with hundreds (if not thousands) of cardboard counters to punch out and 100 page rulebooks, just to watch them all go into crippling debt when Magic: the Gathering began its meteoric rise to world domination. The sneering stopped, replaced mostly by weeping and working overtime. Wargaming and D&D continued on, unabated.
