What do you think of Taleb's advice to only read peer-reviewed academic papers and trashy magazines? IIRC he reasons that you get the facts from the papers and gossip from the mags, which is required to function socially.
The only problem I see with it is that you have a lot of clumsy citation now, such that there are papers whose results have not been replicated, but are cited nonetheless. Also peer-review backlog could make it difficult to get all the relevant information.

Big pharma sponsored work makes up a tiny fraction of research. Big pharma just aren't really that interested - they don't chuck their money around at researchers as much as 'alternative media' would have you believe. Academic research is underpaid and not lucrative at all. As a result, academic researchers are in it for the love and passion. I know a few academic researchers who got into bed with pharma and the majority of the cash went on consumables - salary only made a small bump if at all. All of the projects except one ended up yielding nothing and the research just dropped. That's the nature of research.

its always been like this. The difference is now the internet has created an oversight mechanism that can point out conflicts of interest, hypocrisy and manipulation of data. So I cannot stress this enough, WHENEVER I read any type of self-published or published scholarly article/ Research paper. I read the abstract and citations first. If the abstract is ambiguous and does not discuss results/methods, I never read it. If they have very little citations (Less than 15-20/Depending on field) and or the citations used are not credible in the least sense (I.e. BuzzFeed, WSJ, Twitter...) I never read it. Articles will always be open to scrutiny, and google scholar has an extremely handy tool (Cited By) that allows you to quickly find rebuttal articles or confirmation articles.
