Many of them want to believe they're christians, but they don't like the restraints it puts on them, only the social benefits. So quite often, they'll just drop the restraints - for example, they may want to worship literal golden idols etc. But they still feel the need to prove to themselves they're christian, which is why they externalise and police things from a supposedly-christian lens so much.
Interestingly, for a long time they've taken refuge in some aspect of the knowledge of the antichrist - or rather, antichrists, plural. There's a school of thought that says that the antichrist can do good things, things that would be explicitly christian in a lot of contexts, but because the aim is deception, they're doing it for the wrong reasons, and the people who support these good things are actually inadvertently worshipping the devil and thus going to hell. Hence lashing out at progressive social movements, even movements that they themselves agree with the aims of, because they don't like the people and, again, want to prove that they're real christians.
For many, any action that isn't explicitly within their parameters and social group is that of the antichrist.
