You realize that being a Democrat (or Republican, or any party for that matter) in the 1860's has virtually nothing to do with being one today, right?
The parties have shifted ideologically multiple times in the past 150-odd years. If you had a time machine and went back and tried to explain present-day party platforms to them, they either wouldn't understand what in the hell you were talking about or they would think that you were fucking with them.
After a certain point early in 1862, Lincoln was frustrated with the lack of progressive in the war he created by no recognising the right of the states to secede, as per the delcaration of independence.
He complained to Meade and Steward, "why is it that the US army marched into Mexico City in less than a year, and in over a year we cannot so much as march across Virigina?!"
Meade replied, "Mr. President, the same men who look the US into Mexico are now keeping the US out of Virginia."
they actually didn't...at least not all the way. The reps and dems split into two parties each in the 1860 and 1864 election. The only faction that wanted to expansd slavery was the southern faction of the democrats. Everyone else wanted to limit it. The north democrats and constitutional unionists had previously worked with abolitionists, and the republicans weren't abolishinist until 64.
Alot happened over those years.
