You could try installing an alternative operating system on them, such as postmarketOS

This might go well, especially if your model has good support, or you might have to spend alot of time tinkering with the system and potentially run into problems that can bork the phone. I think it's worth trying if you like this kind of stuff.
You could also look into other linux systems that can be installed onto an Android phone.

I did do that to the samsung s6 i have, even used it as a daily phone with Ressurection remix but quit because of the bad battery life. All the links seem to be dead now tho, so i cant change it (currently stuck romless)
