I can believe that.
Google claims to go through my email for ad targeting but based on the ads I see, I doubt it. It's probably just some automated bot picking up keywords and then fucking it all up. Their anti-crime bots are probably no better and my emails are simply lost among the millions of others.
Meanwhile Protonmail is a known provider of email services for criminals and anti-government folks so of course alphabet agencies would make gaining access to it one of their top priorities. Maybe they've hacked it with some zero days, maybe they've bribed a guy on the inside. Who knows.

If you think about it, the more you try to use specialized services that are used to hide your activity, the more likely you stand out from the rest of normal computer users. The feds see you trying to hide so you're flagged for even more scrutinization than some normie that uses google and social media.
