but our elite ruling class will be increasingly susceptible to caring about imaginary virtual nonsense, opening them up to be manipulated by malicious actors until our distracted and disaffected civilization crumples under the weight of catastrophe. at that point, I assume the massive infrastructural complexities which the "virtual world" will not be nearly strong enough to maintain such luxury.
this is the same problem that bitcoin has. people act like the internet is some magical constant but it is actually a massive highly engineered coordination of millions of skilled workers which requires titanic maintenance resources to keep running. governments can shut down the internet very easily at any moment if they need to, rendering virtual assets immediately worthless.

they literally ground civilization to a halt and stopped people leaving their houses 2 years ago because some old/fat people got the flu. modern people in power care more about abstract ideology than a functioning civilization

You genuinely don't understand how crypto works. The amount of work needed scales. Networks can be scaled and forked arbitrarily. All that's needed is consensus. If everyone stands to lose by the network just ceasing to operate, you better believe they will agree to fork into distinct networks which can communicate in a reasonable amount of time.
