USB 3.0 Ports/Cables

Do I even need them? Will 99.99% of people ever realistically need them?

Depends on what peripherals you're using, obviously. I'd say external storage definitely benefits from it, USB 2.0 is so slow that it heavily bottlenecks even slow stuff like 2.5" HDDs, let alone SSDs.

Does usb A 3.1 and up work for usb-c monitors?

External storage, monitors and certain niche external compute like eGPU all benefit from the higher speed. Out of those, external storage is the one thing the most people will use especially when certain companies (Apple) charge extra for it internally.

i don't think i ever managed to congest a 2.0 one for an extended period of time
so not really, unless you're running inefficient firehouse setups

I don't think video over type A connectors is a thing, but fuck knows. The whole USB 'ecosystem' is a terrible mess at this point. Over USB-C it will depend entirely on the device and the port. Some may not support any video over USB-C at all, some only support it over certain ports despite having multiple and so on.

Yeah try using a modern external HDD or a simply a fast USB SSD-like pendrive without it. Other than that, not really.

Bump for interest

>what are webcams
But I agree, the USB specification is a mess because of manufacturers who want the shiny new name/label but don't want to invest anything into getting any of the new features deserving of that name/label.

i'm using about 12 just in the back of my pc right now, and several through a powered 3.0 hub for things that kept turning off over and over because my motherboard couldn't supply enough power to. so i mean, yeah, i need em

USB 3.0 gives more amps and therefor faster charging speeds. Yes, many people are already benefiting from this. Retard.

>faster charging speeds
why does this matter?
are you doing anything so important that warrants you being in such a hurry?
doubt it, you just dwell in your parents' place like an anime-addicted housecat

>why should companies push forth tech advancements
>get proven wrong
>w-w-well that doesn't matter because i'm a fucking retarded inbred incel that stays inside my room all day long
Great thread, fuck off and die.

Fagoy detected

ITT: retards

Why are you not using a 300 baud modem to connect to the internet? are you doing anything so important that warrants you being in such a hurry?

usb a and usb c only refer to the physical shape and have nothing whatsoever to do eith the actual protocol being used

you can do video out over usb 2.0 and up for things like webcams, etc but im almost certain that all usb c equipped monitors use displayport over usb, in which case you need a port that explicitly supports that and is usb 3 gen 2 or higher

there is no way to tell usb ports apart by looking at them. i have seen usb c ports that only have positive and negative wires and nothing else. worst fucking """standard""" in history.
>hey guys what if we make the next standard to not be a standard at all and just let people do whatever the fuck they want?

cope, sneed, dilate, touch grass, and have sex, incel
>implying I'm not using a 300 baud modem to connect to the internet

usb mice and usb flash storage are the two primary uses of USB ports, specifically on laptops. i have yet to meet a real human being in person that uses neither of these two things on their laptop.
>usb mice
all normies universally agree that trackpads suck and are only to be used when sitting on a park bench or a plane or somewhere you cant realistically use a mouse, and even then they would rather scrape a mouse across their knee instead
>usb flash storage
"the cloud" confuses anyone who doesnt have it pre-configured for them by the store they bought the laptop from, and even then there is a near 100% chance that they dont know how to send a file to someone without email or a usb stick.

if you disagree with either of these, you very clearly have never worked in IT or attended a university, or really been outside at all.

The problem is that manufacturers figured out they can violate the USB specifications and not encounter any significant punishments from either the USB consortium or the public at large. Cue the addition of the USB Gen standards and the monetary incentives to "cheat" and you get the mess you have now. The consortium needs to get its shit together to save the standard because USB turned into something everyone used and liked to something that is being dreaded even as it is actually now becoming universal.

the worst part is with places like the EU forcing people to use usb c, but NOT forcing them to use any particular spec of usb c, only the plug, yhe mess is going to get worse and there is almost no way to fix it without the usb consortium doing it themselves, which they wont, because they are lazy pieces of shit

its almost as if forcing everyone to use a broken standard without any enforced rules as to implementation is a bad idea or something. but at least its reversible!

Yes and yes.
