How do I do this I've been opening up thunar, finding the filename and then searching for the same filename in the file picker for years.

GNOME's file picker issue is 18 years old. When Windows 98 was released with thumbnails in the file picker, Windows was 13 years old (Windows 1.0 was released in 1985)
In other words, Microsoft engineers added a file picker with thumbnails in 13 years, ~25 years ago, while GNOME trannies have made 0 (ZERO) progress in the last 18 (24) years.
GNOME was released in 1999, before some of you were even born, and Windows had thumbnails in the file picker a whole year earlier.
