user, we have a client with a site that you've never seen, heard of, or obviously worked on before. They want to create a marketing page with a form. We don't have any information about how complex it will be, where form submissions will be recorded, if any emails will be triggered, and we're not sure what CMS they're using, if any. Before we continue we need a quick estimate from you on how long this will take. And remember, no takesies backsies!

Deny and ask for more info before proceeding, but you decided to make this thread because you have no self-esteem
A quick estimate would be however long you think it would take times 3
Well, we scheduled this whole meeting with the purpose of obtaining an estimate. Could you maybe give us a ballpark figure?
No, next time don't waste my time with these half assed requests. I'm close to leaving this shit hole to begin with.
Holy fuck I hate Managers who arn't techincal and will gaslight you for not making these insane deadlines
ok guys i pooped out an estimate for my bosses. 18 hours.
You're an idiot
I have been at this company for 5 years, I know how things work. I will not hear about this for another 4-6 months and at that point if it takes longer I'll just say well, that was a 6-month old estimate, things changed.
RIP
ahahahahah
What's the downside of incredibly over-estimating?
>Wow user, why would it take that long?
>[all the reasons you listed]
>Oh ok
>implying managers will let you give any estimate you want and not whatever the reasonable time is minus 40%
haha good one bro
Theyll think you’re incompetent
It's not actually an estimate. It's just a game where I have to guess a number that they will find acceptable. If they don't like it, it results in 2 more hours of meetings trying to "whittle it down" - so I don't over-estimate. I don't care if I under-estimate I just say it's not done yet, going to take longer.
> Everybody good to stay until 6? I'd like to get these numbers down to something easier for the client to digest.

bam done
OP has aspergers btw
4 months
>Sorry that's just how long its going to take
What happens now
I do my best to give a fair estimate and add a little extra time assuming that there are factors I haven’t accounted for.
I then do my best to explain my reasoning, and if I finish significantly faster or slower than the estimate I explain what factors contributed to that.
Obviously the bosses have to be somewhat fair and reasonable for this to work, but by doing this and putting in a solid effort I feel content that I did what I could.
>What happens now
You get fired for being annoyingly obtuse
> I've been at this company for 5 years
It's time to hop jobs user, if you want a better job and pay it's best to switch every 5 years or so
If he got fired over that I'd be in OPs favor
>No. Come back when you have info on all these unknowns
Thank god
Depends at what level he’s at and how secure he feels. If you’re competitive and ambitious and young it’s good to job hop to increase salary and learn more.
However, if you’re an older family man or not overly motivated some people decide to take the foot off the pedal in the rat race and just coast in their current position and live more of life outside of work. You have to have a comfy secure spot though where you don’t have to worry too much about becoming obsolete or laid off
>Alright, talk to you later.
No matter what ypu have to be at work 40 hours a day. You might as well get paid as high as possible with the lowest amount of stress
