They can't effectively monetize the platform because they are socialists. They've made it very difficult to make money from FireFox extensions, same as Chrome, which had the potential to an app store like cash cow. Instead they introduced security threats because the develops now monetize add-ons in more covert ways.
Microsoft or Apple buying Mozilla and taking FireFox on as the official browser of the platform would be interesting.
