Are there any good efficient instant messaging protocols/software for business and everyday use?
IRC technologically best, but sucks in practice. >simple >adheres to unix philosophy >plain text >use whatever client you want (emacs, web, weechat etc) >open protocol
Essential features missing, needs to be 100% reliable. >notifications, can't miss out on important time sensitive events >chat history, should always be immediately accessible and searchable
majority of irc clients have notifications. also chat history (logging). you need a bouncer configured if you want to see chats when youre not online.

XMPP is extremely efficient. For a server, I recommend ejabberd over prosody. It's a bit more complete (out of the box file upload and such), and apparently more performant for large user bases.

I still use Pidgin for my IM needs. Are there better clients nowadays?
welcome to Any Forums, where paying for things like internet services is an alien concept. people are are so jewish they make jews disgusted. they want everything to be free. then there's the problem of severe mental retardation. setting up a bouncer would take some of these resident Any Forumseniuses months to achieve.

XMPP almost everything you desire, except most clients do not support proper searching and notifications are really bad on some of them. It has some great web clients, though, like converse.js.
Matrix is far easier to set up, but gives you far less administrative features. E2EE will also break at random and not read the keys for hours on end.

Irc doesn't support images, audio, video, and has no logging or search support. No, local search and logging is terrible if you need company wide search.
>Essential features missing, needs to be 100% reliable. >>notifications, can't miss out on important time sensitive events >>chat history, should always be immediately accessible and searchable there's hundreds of clients, do you really think there's not a single one with these features? zoomer tard thread
