at some point they're just gonna .zip video files and tell the consoomers it's a totally new codec and cpu's will be fast enough by then that they can't even tell the difference
Because early iterations of new codecs always suck ass. 10-bit HEVC is now 60-70% more efficient than 8-bit H.264 at 4K res and the encoder has been optimized so much that high end consumer desktop CPUs can now encode 4K HEVC at 20+ FPS which is insane because a decade ago high end HEDT CPUs could barely crank out a few FPS at 1080p. Same thing will happen with VVC so expect to wait around a decade before it becomes usable for consumer use.
BTW I don't blame people for sticking with H264 for low resolution video (ie less than 4K). The main magic trick of HEVC is the use of big ass CTUs that optimize the size of macroblocks within them. It works very well in high res video but once you get down to something like ultra poorfag 720p, HEVC only ends up being like ~30% more efficient than H264 and only a nut would use HEVC with DVDs.

10-bit HEVC is still useful for eliminating color banding at low bitrates since there's more hw decoding for that but not for 10-bit H264 for some retarded reason.

Anime has tons of still shots which can take advantage of those huge CTUs so HEVC is like black magic at low bitrates for anime.
If you're downloading TV shows as they air it's going to be H266/VVC at some point because that's the one getting used for japanese TV broadcasts

Nope. The Japanese TV broadcast standard is encrypted and nobody has managed to decrypt it, so people only upload recordings done with capture cards, and normally they're H.264, not even H.265.

guess I'm a nut then; I would use AV1 for encoding DVDs but the encoder is bugged and chokes on half the DVDs I've tried, something to do with telecined cinema content
