my theory is that people are introduced to java too soon, and thus are overwhelmed by all the shit needed to make you hello world. it throws you right into "but why this?", "but why that bullshit?", and "what's this good for?" mode. Of course, there are very good reasons to all these questions, but they will never be addressed and you just cargo cult through it. And that's just ecosystem/build aspects. Typically they go right ahead and throw OOP and design patterns at you too, and in the worst ways possible.
Go write C and other stuff for a bunch of years, then come back to java. It will all make much more sense, and the ecosystem/convention thing will be a joy, all of a sudden. Sirs.

Maybe in Pajeetistan. Many colleges and unis now teach Python as a first language, a pretty reasonable choice. Especially as it is also useful in science and other engineering fields.
