Productivity efficiency

I am in a dilemma, I already quit multiple sources of entertainment that is stimulating in a mediocre way such as social media feeds and youtube. This is obviously beneficial to me but I have 2 more unproductive hobbies, consuming anime related content, and one mobile gacha.

The question is: Do I keep those hobbies while studying programming, or have no hobbies and be bored in the downtime while I am not studying?

The reason I ask this is that I fear that one of this choices might be counterproductive looking like a recipe on burning out... or maybe being "bored" will counteract this. Why am I betting on boredom you may ask, well theoretically the lowered state of my dopamine requirements might make programming more fun for me rather than a chore where I would be stimulated rather than doing nothing at all.

I do not know yet. I am currently contemplating this. I am too attached to my hobbies but if this increase the rate my progression then I will do it.

Looking at it objectively, skipping the "high dopamine" stuff would do more good than harm. Most people would tell you that "its okay" and "every one deserves some rest", but if we're being honest, most of them spend more time on social media, porn & videogames than they do asleep but what they're saying does have some truth to it, you need an enjoyable way to chill out and relax, but it certainly shouldn't be something that is designed to be addictive rather than enjoyable. And I think this is the crux of it all. Most of the things you do for "fun" can be generally divided into "enjoyable" or "addictive". You're probably biased and might put some of the addictive things in the enjoyable category, but if you're honest and real with yourself, almost everything you do on your leisure time is addictive and not enjoyable.

So, to answer your question, you should 100% have things you do when you're not studying/working, but they should be non-addictive things. Like

meeting friends IRL,
watching full movies (NO series),
reading books (books are honestly really fucking dope, I started last year and kicked myself for not starting earlier, now I feel like there's too many books and too little time lol),
picking up fun hobbies like sports or cooking or whatever


I know this all probably sounds corny, but its something I've been thinking about for a while. I'm not just writing this because it just feels like the correct thing to do, I'm writing this because I've been thinking about this for a while and would be pleased if someone else benefited as well.

Lastly, this is a bit of a tangent, just know that most of the addictive habits are slippery slopes (install game play for 1 hour a day, then 2 etc) while the good habits are an uphill climb at first, then you gain momentum and it starts leveling and becoming down hill.
Don't fall for the slippery slopes of addictive habits, and push through the initial resistances of the good habits.

atleast wagecucks could theoretically get a network or a promotion or experience for a better job or whatever, there's some hope even for wagies, none for consoomers.

Get a more tangible real life hobby. Judging your character itt - become a local frequent visitor to a coffee place, use that time to reflect on things and satisfy mobile phone desires with ocassional (You) phonefarming

Not him, but one element is that they're usually planned as contained "experiences" rather than ongoing "tune in next week" stuff usually made up on the fly just to keep you coming back.

A few months ago I read somewhere that the first episode of a series has a great fight scene, but wasn't able to find a non-edited video of it, so I just watched that episode and despite not liking it at all (and the fight scene wasn't that good) I fell for the cliffhanger and watched the second one as well.
Cliffhanger after cliffhanger I ended up watching the whole two seasons that are currently out.
If it can be strong enough to make you want to keep watching something you don't like, it can be addicting on something that you actually enjoy.

Look at how long a series can be bad before it eventually falls out of favor. BSG being a major example of that "writing by the seat of your pants" nonsense, and Lost as the "just do shit to make them come back."

If you want something to do in your down time take up running, cycling, woodworking, painting etc.

Yeah I remember watching Lost all at once when the last season came out and having people tell me I missed out on having that mystery between each episode/season and the excitement of going online and discussing theories with others, etc.
