i apologize as this is not strictly on topic, but are there any modern laptops that have any sort of aesthetic whatsoever? thinkpads are kind of nice but there doesn't seem to be anyone making something that takes any chances, design-wise. almost everything's a macbook clone.

Modern laptops that have any sort of deviation from typical clamshell off the top of my head: MNT Reform, Asus Pro Duo, Surface Laptop (alcantara), HP Elite (leather folio)
Aside from historic one-offs, older ones were Thinkpad 701 (butterfly keyboard), W701 (dual-screen)

I don't think there is much debate when it comes to laptops. The older thinkpads were pretty much perfectly designed.
