Note that Vim, microEmacs, and Nano come out of the box for editing files. To run programs using X, you need to install XQuartz (recommend way is through MacPorts).

Does using Time Machine just utterly fuck up hard drives? I've had four drives (five including a time capsule) just stop fucking behaving reliably for backup. This is over the span of like 10 years.

Finally, I’m getting a M1 Max 64gb of Ram for grad school.
I’ve never had a Mac before but ideally I will be using Geneious, AlphaFold, and other phylogeny compiling programs.

What am I in for? Is there anything I should do immediately after getting it?

Other programs I intend on using: Anki/Obsidian and maybe Joplin if it’s better than obsidian.

Is there anything else you think I should get? I want to be very productive and ideally study out of school hours at least 4 hours a day.

I have no idea who did those others.

I just want legit advice on how to use a Mac. Why is Any Forums so fucking useless

Based mods.

Should I get a Mac Mini, install macOS Server, add a big bunch of disks to a thunderbolt enclosure, and run it as a time capsule?

14" or 16"?

>my gf's 13" retina early 2015 macbook pro
>formats it
>doesn't remember her Apple ID (just her old hotmail email)
>go to iforgot, it finds the account with the email
>go to account
>next page never loads
how can we fix this?
she just wants everything to work as before (Netlfix, her printer...), and recover her _thousands_ of pics on iCloud.

Just tell her boyfriend to send all his dick pics again.

You might have to fucking call Apple. Like on a telephone.

I've completed a transition to the Apple ecosystem although 1st gen m1 leaves much to be desired (LMAO1EXTERNALMONITOR). iPhone 13 pro, Apple silicon, Airtags, Airpods ecosystem w/h1, Apple watch, nobody else can really compete.

I've got a Ryzen 5950x server with 128gb ram for running the swathes of shit that does not and never will run on Apple Silicon. I think this is the way.

16" just feels uncomfy to me, idk user. It feels like it's not as portable as 14" while being pointless while docked, the larger footprint is a pain. 14" m1 max battery life and thermals are just a touch lacking though.

I always install bettertouchtool on day 1.

I'm with that the 16" is probably too big. I had a 17" late-2011 MBP and it was just too fucking big to use as anything other than a desktop replacement laptop.

user that's not /friendly/
maybe I'll just make a new apple id for now so she can update the OS and all the rest, and then let her worry abour her old apple ID later.

In any case, just go to the actual crapple store or take advantage of the generous return policy Apple has. I've returned an iPhone because it was the wrong screen size for me before no questions asked.

Nah, sometimes stuff "falls off" the Amazon truck. There's no return policy.

Then buy direct from a store if you're paranoid you're going to be held liable for a lost shipment you didn't sign for.

can you install windows 10 on a macbook running macos 10.13?
or you have to update to monterey first in order to make bootcamp work

Bootcamp is a shit meme use vmware fusion, virtualbox, or parallels like a civilized person and switch between OSes with a 4 finger swipe.
