Filepicker thumbnails and systray, sure. But desktop icons? Who the fuck uses that these days. Just make a folder called desktop and maximize the window, congratz, you have desktop icons. The desktop metaphor is dead, desktop icons are on the way out, and I am glad there is no desktop for random applications to keep adding to against my will. I much prefer not having it

Directories aren't tied to the desktop metaphor. Sure, I said folders instead of directories.
People are sufficiently able to use computers these days, that we can deviate from the metaphoric conceptualization of the graphical interface without throwing people off. I.e. the desktop metaphor effectively refers to itself now, instead of the original metaphoric vehicle, the desktop
