I did something similar. Ordered from Home Depot, did a light stain and then some kind of orange wax 3 years ago. I redid it all with gel stain and poly in Feb and it came out awesome. Still have another slab in the garage. Maybe one day I'll turn it into a table or entertainment center or something.

I'm not, none of my guests have complained about a smell. If anything it smells earthy, like a garden because of the soil. It's filled with a clean up crew, made up mostly of isopods and springtails who break down organic waste.

The gel stain was pretty awesome I did 2 coats of mahogany since it matched my smaller side desk. Spread on with a foam brush, wipe off in 10m. Don't rush the dry times. Did yours come presanded?

Mine came oiled. This time around I'll be using a staining paid, and the foam brush for the polyurethane. In the past I made the mistake of using a bristle brush because I didn't know any better. Spent half the time picking bristles off the desk while doing the finish.

I actually went bristle brush this time instead of foam for the poly bc air bubbles are your enemy. Foam was perfect for the stain though.
