Winnux

I see a lot of talk here about Windows vs Linux. Tbhdesu I feel like this is an old debate, now everyone is moving to winnux, we can have both, I don't feel like "choosing an OS" is something we should still be debating in the year 2000+22. Mature users have understood this and have seen the lines blur between the systems, this is now a moot point, please grow up g and just use winnux.

Thanks, but I'm sticking with free software.

i dont give a fuck what you use, not my problem if you want to be a retard

Yeah, WSL2 is fast because it's literally just Linux.

Linux has less overhead than Windows, so it makes more sense to run the occasional Windows program on Linux through Wine than it does to run coreutils, bash, etc on Windows through WSL.

?

Words have meaning you know. Like for instance being a woman means you were born with female genitalia which you will never have

i dont want to use windows though, it's really bad

YWNBAW

I'd rather deal with the overhead than trying to deal with keeping a Linux system up

That's a bait

Yes I'm just going to say it. Windows made the right move here. Linux and Mac are growing slowly while more and more developers move away from windows. The same happened to ruby. The ruby language runs terrible on windows, because of this some developers started using vm's or switched to Mac OS / Linux. Once they switched most did not move back to windows. All this because the ruby developers gave a shit a bout windows and just gave it lower priority.

The same thing started happening again with dockers and other tools. And windows made the right move. They started doing the only thing there platform is still the best at they started to support Linux and make it run on windows so that developers did not have to switch to Linux.

Imagine using WSL as a server backend

Not all distros are Arch. Debian stable only gets bug fixes, and literally *just works* moreso than Windows's current "The user is the bug tester" approach.
If you want something with newer packages there is Fedora or Debian unstable.

I was messing around with WSL on W11 on the gaming laptop I keep around. What a fucking joke of an OS. Even just getting everything installed is a whirlwind of app stores and downloading .exe's and winget, everything is saving all over the place, sometimes you are in a legacy menu, sometimes you are in a W11 app settings menu, sometimes it's opening .json files (which of course need to be opened in yet another program). You have Windows Terminal from the MS Store but it's not the latest version, even on a W11 ISO you downloaded two days ago, even after Windows ran 'updates' in multiple places - installing everything from security patches to drivers to new software, but not the update to THIS software. And then you open Terminal, in which there's a dropdown of multiple command line programs that would actually run IN Terminal - one of which is Windows Powershell, which is NOT the latest best version which is another piece of software entirely called Powershell, which you need to install from the Microsoft Store.

And this goes on and on forever. It's all piecemeal, held together by duct tape, sometimes you are changing very simple things in an overdesigned GUI made for babies, while other times you are in your registry typing in arcane things. Who is this designed for? Why go through the effort of dressing up certain aspects of the OS, when "step 2" of most tasks involves diving into the deepest forgotten recesses of legacy software?

I use WSL regularly...It's neat, but it's not the same as running linux on bare metal. Some things it doesn't do well
