Why?

What if my home NAS is entirely solid state storage?

why not? because you're too poor to have it no one else shouldn't have it either?

I've looked into the economics and usage patterns of providing 10gbe to homes.
They absolutely do not need it, but bigger number means they will buy my internet.

I don't need a lot of things I have. I get them anyway.

2.5GbE is all you need.

>you will not have anything you don't NEED and you will be happy

You’re right. I need 100

none of your devices can handle that
imagine a phone with 100gb/s, it would burst into flames..

> have two switches for the two sides of the house 22 meters apart
> have 40G on om4 cable between them

Why waste money like that?

You cant usually consum 10G in a second

It's cheap so I don't see why wouldn't you want it.

this unless for whatever reason you are doing massive data transfers on a routine basis over a network, 1Gb networking is all you need. The only exception i would say would be your backbone CAT cabling throughout the house, id say install whatever max bandwidth you can realistically afford.

Wouldn't call it a waste
Solid state drives shouldn't suffer as much if any from just merely being on unlike HDDs.
HDDs are always spinning and acquiring mechanical wear.
If an SSD dies, rebuilds should be very quick

What if boot off nfs? 10GbE is just 1GB/s and not even fast enough to saturate a mid range SSD.
10Gbit/s, or 10Gbyte/s? The former is trivial and you probably do that any time you copy a few files on SSD.

At home 10Gb would be just a waste of energy.

t. Someone who doesnt understand voice coil motors

I restored 10TB of backups last year and it changed my mind about "need"ing 10gbe.

but I use lots of network-based video and RDP.

If you wanna trust drives with 100k hours on then be my guest
