Effin nice shifting apparatuses (I'm fine with the non electrical ones, they also became very very good), tubeless tires, for roads very lightweight racing bicycles.
For lazy commuters there are battery powered bicycles.

Than the alternatives? Not at all. Fat hulk of metal with a combustion engine or anything else isn't close.
Bicycles are really very efficient while still having some speed.

Not really needed at all. Besides a reasonable amount of increase is even quite fine for countries with normal levels of consumption.

There is a reason why pneumatic tires are used everywhere. What's the alternative? 5 kg of solid or close-to-solid rubber? Air has the benefit of not weighing that much.
