Watching "Married with Children" start to finish and just came across this Bundy Battlestation from the May 14th 1989 episode "The Computer Show." The ad for the computer itself said cost it $2,100 with a 200 dollar rebate originally, but the whole set-up came out to $2,500 by the end of the episode. That's 5,668 bucks in 2022 dollars. They actually give the specs too:
>3600 baud modem
>VGA high resolution color monitor
>40 MB hard disk
>7 MB RAM
The running theme of the episode is never once used because it is totally useless to his family, so we never see the rig in action. Bundy could schizophrenically hear the computer taunting him throughout the episode, and by the end he smashes it with a sledgehammer.
So how good would that rig have been in reality? Because Marcy's bitch-ass at first talks up the specs, but then later on says it's obsolete dogshit.

>Because Marcy's bitch-ass at first talks up the specs
Thats because Marcy is a bulldyke troll to Al. Jefferson is a Cuck and Steve's balls dropped at one point and left.

>So how good would that rig have been in reality?
not good at all because it's fake. 3600 baud isn't even a standard modem speed desu

That's pretty good stats for 1989. They would have probably been the only family in the neighborhood that had a computer. Unless there was a kid down the street with a Trash-80 or something. I don't think people really understand how rare home computers were in that era.
>Bundy could schizophrenically hear the computer taunting him throughout the episode, and by the end he smashes it with a sledgehammer.
Based. Al was always a smart dude. He knew that computer would ruin his children's lives if they ever found the porn and BBSs.

That attitude was pretty common back then. My Uncle used to call our computer "the devil in the corner". He refused to use it himself. He would shame anyone that used it. He threatened to shoot it multiple times. When he'd get good and drunk he'd go on long rants about "the beast system" and how computers and barcodes were going to be used to enslave us.

He died a few years ago. I miss him.

>He died a few years ago.
Might be a blessing in disguise, maybe best he will never know just how right he was.
My condolences regardless

I lost a lot of friends and family in 2018. I was really sad about it but now I'm happy. They didn't live to see the cluster fuck of the last couple of years.

It wasn't a common top speed, but 3600 was definitely a standard speed. They wouldn't have used one of those handset adapters though.

>They didn't live to see the cluster fuck of the last couple of years.
Are you sad they died, or are you sad that you didn't die first?

Most people would have still been on 300 or 1200 baud in 1989. Al had a beast of a system for 89.
>RAM
Most people didn't even have 1MB. High end systems shipped with 2MB.
>HDD
Most people wouldn't have had this. If they'd spent the 1k for an HDD they would have probably had 20MB at most.
>Monitor
Most people still used a CRT TV for a monitor. Monitors were still expensive add-ons that usually costs as much as the PC itself.

Married with Children is a fantastic show. Ahead of it's time and has great writing. I recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it already.

zoomers wont watch it because it wasnt shot on film and will never be rescanned in 4K or even 1080p.

Then for all the non zoomers, I highly recommend that you watch Married with Children.

>"Aaaaaaaaaal, buy me an iPhone! I want one!"
>"No, Peg."
>Crowd erupts in cheers

I wanna watch it just for Katey Sagal's voice

>1989
>3600 baud modem
by that time 9600 was already standard. 33600 & 19200 were already pushing cards. Al Bundy got crooked on that part.

7MB ram. How would you get this exactly?
My first computer in what must have been 1990 was 386sx/33 with 1MB ram and a 40mb HDD and it cost 3 grand

Could have been 4+2+1
