Assuming you don't want proprietary bullshit, there are still good options out there. Discourse seems to be a popular one, though its more like a threaded sort of thing some don't like quite as much.

Here are some options - itsfoss.com/open-source-forum-software/ . Covers a lot of the newer stuff and even some older like SimpleMachines phpBB and other classics. Oh also depending on how much of an autist you want to be, check out stuff like Syndie (which may be defunct; not sure if there's a fork), but Lemmy and can be setup as forum style or aggregator style. There's also the fully distributed Aether. Know I' mforgetting at least one or two more, but there's a lot of FOSS options besides the proprietary shit or general kludge .
